Villa Maya is a private natural reserve that it has the objective to conserve the natural resources. It is located 17 km outside of San Miguel down town, on the center of Cozumel Island.

Villa Maya provides low density services and facilities for eco – tourism travelers, renting cabañas or hut with queen size bed & hammocks, electricity and WFi. It also  encourage wild life management and environmental education programs to increase the ecological culture of locals and visitors. It offers a unique opportunity to visit the jungle and all different vegetation communities in it.

Allows a wide range of guests, especially those with a passion for outdoors, requires reasonably good physical condition and an interest in learning about the tropical environments and the ancient mesoamerican Mayan    culture.

Several facilities are present to serve guests, among these are: Entrance/ assembling area, dining area, restrooms and showers, Mayan cabañas or huts with queen size bed and hammock, camping areas, bonfire, signs showing the way and directions at the interpretive trails, also, signs indicating tree-species and their Mayan use, 5,000 meters of trails trought the tropical dry forest, wetlands and beach.

Villa Maya comprehend primarily of tropical dry forest in which it can be distinguish different vegetal associations like: medium tropical forest; low tropical forest, wetlands; orchids zone; cenote, palm of Nacax zone (Coccotrinax readii); bromeliads zone, secondary vegetation; Milpa or farming zone.

Villa Maya has a cultural heritage that the ansesters left behind, expirence cultural and archaeolgical expeditions, which are usually unseen by the casual island visitors. It is also the safest way to visit the tropical dry forest. The reserve was initiated as a conservation project that evolved into a research and eco-tourism project, focusing on the ethical protection of the island’s natural beauty.

Even though the island of Cozumel does not have poisonous fauna, the following clothing is recommended for your comfort: Light hiking boots or tennis shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, hat. Other items are recommended as small backpack, towel, suntan lotion, camera, binoculars and field guides.

The natural reserve has a code of practice to minimize negative social, environmental and economical impacts of your visit.

1. Carry your ID.

2. Remember you are a guest.

3. Be culturally sensitive and respect local customs.

4. The Mesoamerican Nican-Axcan philosophical concept is promoted.

When walking on the trails:

5. Avoid separating from the group and never go off the trail.

6. Respect wild fauna and flora, do not disturb wildlife or wildlife habitats.

7. When moving do it slowly and quietly, without making sudden movements.

8. Keep a prudent distance from birds (~10 to 20 m).

9. If you see a nest or burrow, do not disturb.

10. If a native mammal chick or young is found, do not intervene unless in imminent danger.

11. Avoid taking pets on a wildlife viewing outing.

12. Avoid using auditory lures on recreational outings for bird watching or photography.

13. We discourage the use of recordings or imitations to attract birds, but if used, do not exceed four min total per site, playing 20 second pulses, followed by long pauses.

14. Do not use flash and high light intensity lamps at night.

15. Keep your voice low, avoid using speakers, use earphones to listen.

16. Leave the area cleaner than you found it, help keep the environment clean, it is forbidden to disperse solid waste, and if you find any, collaborate by collecting it and disposing of it in the indicated containers.

17. It is forbidden to light any type of flammable material.

18. The extraction of any material found within the reserve, is not allowed.

19. Consider the implications of buying plant and animal products. Find out if they are rare or endangered.
