code of practice
Villa Maya Nature Reserve – Cozumel
Welcome to Villa Maya. By following these guidelines, you contribute to the preservation of the area's natural and cultural heritage. Thank you for being a responsible visitor.
General Guidelines
- Always carry a valid ID.
- Remember: you are a guest in this natural and cultural space.
- Be respectful of local customs and traditions; practice cultural sensitivity.
- We promote the Mesoamerican Nican-Axcan philosophical concept, which values harmony with nature and all living beings.
On the Trails
- Stay with your group and never leave the designated trails.
- Respect all wildlife—do not touch, feed, or disturb animals or plants.
- Move slowly and quietly; avoid sudden movements.
- Maintain a respectful distance from birds (approximately 10–20 meters).
- Do not approach or disturb nests, burrows, or dens.
- If you find a young wild animal, do not intervene unless it is in immediate danger.
- Do not bring pets on wildlife observation outings.
- Avoid using sound lures or calls for birdwatching or photography.
- The use of recordings or imitations to attract birds is discouraged. If used, limit playback to a maximum of 4 minutes per site, in 20-second bursts with long pauses in between.
In Lodge and Common Areas
- Avoid using flash photography or high-intensity lights at night.
- Keep noise to a minimum. Do not use external speakers—use earphones instead.
- Help keep the environment clean:
- Do not litter.
- Leave the area cleaner than you found it.
- If you see waste, please help by collecting and disposing of it in the designated bins.
- Do not light fires or use flammable materials.
- Do not remove or extract any natural materials from the reserve.
- Be mindful when buying plant or animal products—ensure they are not rare, protected, or endangered species.
Your host,
Serch.
