DESCRIPTION

Discover the rich biodiversity of Cozumel through guided birdwatching tours in three distinct natural environments — coastal scrub, wetlands, and tropical forest. Each offers unique opportunities to observe the island’s diverse birdlife and ecosystems.

Locations and Activities

1. Punta Ixpalbarco

Located within the Natural Protected Area of Flora and Fauna on the east side of Cozumel Island.
This tour includes a guided walk along the access trail to Punta Ixpalbarco, passing through mangroves, freshwater lagoons, coastal dune scrub, and wetland habitats teeming with biodiversity.

It is an excellent opportunity to observe waterbirds and coastal species in their natural habitat. The hike covers approximately 1–2 km through communities featuring chit palms, siricote trees, sea grape, and native coastal plants such as riñonina, suriana, and tournefortia.

At the end of the tour, the group will review and discuss the species sightings and overall experience.

2. Villa Maya

Located in the center of the island, near the archaeological site of San Gervasio, Villa Maya is a Private Nature Reserve that showcases the island’s interior ecosystems.

This walking tour explores trails through tropical forest, lowland forest, and wetland areas, offering visitors a chance to observe the island’s changing topography and soil composition, as well as its influence on the distribution of vegetation and wildlife.

Participants will learn about the geology and ecological dynamics of Cozumel while experiencing the tranquility of the dense jungle.

(Customized excursions available upon request.)

3. El Cedral

Situated in the south-central part of Cozumel, within the Natural Protected Area of Flora and Fauna, El Cedral features extensive tropical forest habitats that attract a variety of resident and migratory bird species.

This area provides excellent opportunities for spotting tropical forest species while exploring the diverse ecosystems that characterize Cozumel’s southern landscape.
